Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation
June 2020 - December 2020
As part of Northeastern’s six month Co-Op program, I served as a Graphic Designer and Academic Programs Assistant to the Director of Academic Programs of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
As COVID-19’s effect on students’ ability to visit art exhibits became rampant, we looked for ways to keep students engaged. To find solutions, we decided to host virtual tours of the museum’s exhibits. I designed a 12-page booklet to accompany the “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” exhibition. Held in the Ann and Graham Gund Gallery from October 2020 to July 2021, the exhibit celebrated the intersection of street art, music, and culture, surrounding the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The booklet was created as a visual and educational companion for college students attending virtual tours and participating in live Q&A sessions with the MFA. It featured main works from the exhibition, including Basquiat’s Hollywood Africans (1983), alongside commentary and essays written by the exhibition’s co-curators: Liz Munsell, the MFA’s Lorraine and Alan Bressler Curator of Contemporary Art, and Greg Tate, a writer and musician.
